I had a really lovely New Year celebration this year. Day one of the year was spent oxidizing ethanol molecules into acetaldehyde, and then to acetic acid. The first step was catalysed by the enzyme alcohol dehydrogenase, and the second by acetaldehyde dehydrogenase. I seem to belong to the group of individuals in the world who have less effective forms of one or both of these enzymes, and therefore experience more severe symptoms from ethanol consumption than others. I also sprained my foot biking drunk home in high heels. Don’t ask, it was something about a cat, fireworks and a footpath curb coming out of nowhere…I was fine a couple of days later….no, really I was.
